With every spare and strike, the pins aren’t the only thing falling– the Grant Girls Bowling Team is knocking down expectations and rolling its way into the spotlight. For many, bowling is just a simple way to have fun– but in the eyes of Varsity players, it’s a game founded on lots of practice, patience, skill and most importantly, teamwork. Without teamwork, the team wouldn’t be where they are today: placing top 5 for each of their tournaments this season.
Led by Desiree Dickson and Kaitlyn Bartlett, the team practices several times a week, with games and tournaments sprinkled throughout. From the first practice to the last, this team has been committed to improving their game. These practices focus on patience and teamwork. Players work on perfecting their form, accuracy, all while having fun. “We definitely bring each other’s moods up. We try to keep positive,” senior Kaitlyn Bartlett said. Their dedication has stayed consistent throughout the season. Not only do these team leaders have skill, but they play a big role in keeping the team motivated. Individually, Desiree Dickson holds the highest average on the team, and she has the most experience at the Varsity level, while Kaitlyn Bartlett has also been an IHSA Sectional Qualifier. These players have shown how much a player can improve in 4 years. “It’s a mental game, and once you get frustrated, you’re gonna struggle,” Bartlett said.
This season has already brought exciting moments– the Varsity squad has already had key wins against the toughest teams and “each player continues to increase their average,” coach Millar said. Mrs. Millar makes sure to praise each player, not only for their successes, but for their sportsmanship and dedication. “When every girl in the lineup is rolling successfully, I look around and think ‘this is why I do this!’” she said. Whether it’s a bus ride to games, team lunches or sharing laughs between games, it’s all a part of the experience. Players say that the bonds they form are just as important as the scores they win.
Beyond competition, the bowlers say that the best part of the team is the friendships they build. “I like making connections with new people as well.” Kaitlyn Bartlett said. Whether it’s celebrating a win or laughing between matches, the girls have created a supportive culture that continues to shine through the years.
Balancing school and athletics can be challenging, but these athletes manage their time well. They stay on top of their assignments and “if we’re struggling in school, my coach will allow us to do homework at practice,” Bartlett said.
As the season comes to a close, the Grant girls bowling team has big goals for the end of the season. They hope to finish strong, qualify for state and keep improving every game. But no matter the outcome, their teamwork, dedication, and team spirit make them a team to watch.
