Soccer may not be known for high scores, but that doesn’t make it any less intense. From the bleachers, the game might look simple. At school, it’s easy to sport a Messi jersey, but once players step onto the field, it’s a whole different story. The game demands grit, endurance, sharp coordination, tenacity, and above all, leadership. Time and again, the Grant Community High School boys soccer team has shown they have what it takes to rise to the challenge.

Loyalty to the team is never in question under Coach Ben Burnet’s watch. Most players stay with the team throughout their entire high school careers. It’s that lasting bond that fuels their motivation and inspires a shared determination to take down the competition.

“The desire to win is always in the back of their minds,” Burnet said.

But winning isn’t about any one individual, it’s about the entire team and the confidence they build together. Every practice, sprint and pass strengthens the connection that keeps them pushing forward as one.

Players like juniors Jayden Bueno and Alex Luna embody that team-first mindset. Bueno dominates in goal, while Luna’s clutch game-winning goals set the tone for the squad. Their drive and dedication lift everyone around them, reminding teammates what it means to be part of something bigger than themselves.

“We want to keep trying. We want to win,” said Bueno.

Burnet explains this kind of determination isn’t something athletes are simply born with, it’s built over time through hard work and a genuine love for the game. The team isn’t just chasing a conference win; they want to build a legacy.

Soccer may not always light up the scoreboard, but the GCHS boys soccer team proves that true greatness is measured in teamwork, resilience and leadership. From the bleachers to the field, one thing is clear: this team knows what it means to play their sport.
