Fantasy football can be harmless until it becomes a problem– it can lead to excessive gambling, obsession, or neglecting responsibilities. It’s potentially a problem due to expensive gambling and financial stress, causing people to spend too much time checking on their teams in the scores, which might interfere with their work, school or personal relationships. For some, the competitive nature of fantasy football can create unhealthy pressure and frustration, especially if becoming overly invested.
Fantasy football affects GCHS students by turning an activity that could be social into a source of stress and distractions. Instead of just bonding with friends, students get worried about not watching the game and their team or outcomes, which can lead to obsession. This distraction can interfere with school work and other responsibilities. Additionally, if gambling elements are involved, it can introduce risky behaviors that might harm both social relationships and personal well-being. Fantasy football with family can be harmless and even fun when it’s kept light-hearted– on the other hand, fantasy football can sometimes lead into arguments and distraction, especially if people get too competitive. Junior Leon Jiron says “It is fun with family but punishments can get extremely stressful if you are in the bottom bowl.”
