For most spectators, color guard is just a dazzling halftime performance, but for sophomore Madison Clack, it’s a canvas painted with strength, determination and unwavering passion.
Clack’s journey begins as a freshman, when her mother’s gentle influence drew her to the world of color guard. Her mother, a seasoned guard coach and performer herself, became both a mentor and inspiration for Clack. Having her mother as her coach wasn’t just beneficial, but was a confidence booster. While having Clacks mother being a coach, during the fall 2024 season, the team went through four different coaches in just two short months. This coaching carousel didn’t just shake the team’s foundation, it sent waves crashing over Clack, threatening her determination.
“My freshman year, we had a coach leave halfway through the year without any warning, so it was literally our captain coaching us,” Clack recalled.
However, these struggles became the force that taught her to persevere. Clack refused to surrender, lifting her teammates’ spirits when shadows of defeat crept in. This led to a transformation she credits to the team’s leaders and the program itself.
“[The captains] are good at inclusivity and welcoming people,” Clack reflected with a warm smile. “Because of guard, now I want to talk to people,” Clack expressed.
Having team captains who stood tall, forming bonds and crafting routines from chaos became the heartbeat that kept Clack’s spirit dancing through the winter and fall seasons.
The winter season of 2024 painted new challenges across Clack’s path, like adapting to new coaching styles, mastering unfamiliar techniques and competing in ten competitions instead of their usual five. The transition felt like learning a new language, but with her mother’s steady presence as a coach, Clack found her anchor in the storm.
Walking the delicate tightrope of having a parent as a coach brings both golden opportunities and whispered concerns, such as the fear of being favored or receiving experiences that might overshadow her teammates’ journeys.
In the years moving forward, Clack dreams of stepping into the captain’s role and is ready to extend the same hand that once lifted her up. She envisions creating a welcoming environment for newcomers, ensuring they feel the magic of belonging with their colorful family.
The color guard’s environment sparkles with something truly extraordinary. Whether it’s the electric energy of warmups or the beautiful gesture of helping a competitor rise after a performance, color guard is a family that everyone yearns to find.
After Clack’s high school career closes, Clack’s eyes are set on the stage of the Drum Corps International where her dreams will soar even higher.
