| “The Poet X”: A book that speaks the words we can’t say; the truth of being different. It is a novel written entirely in poems, from the perspective of the main character, Xiomara. As an Afro-Latina going to a predominately white school, she talks honestly to the reader about her identity and struggles in her life.
“The Poet X” describes Xiomara’s experience as an Afro-Latina, as well as her twin brother’s struggles exploring sexuality. “The Poet X” is a good read, not only because of the inclusivity, but the easy way in which it is written. Xiomara writes things people are scared to say: the hate faced in everyday teenage life. She is able to find herself by the end of the book, and it takes the reader through Xiomara’s inspiring perseverance. In my opinion, I think everyone should give this novel a chance. It carries words in a way no other book has and the message of being authentically you lasts further than the small print of the pages. |
