Friday night lights are about more than just football at Grant Community High School, they’re also about dressing up with friends and enjoying halftime performances. Watching the Bulldogs’ cheerleaders inspired senior Gianna Deacon to join the squad her freshman year.

Since then, cheerleading has given Deacon a deeper connection to Grant beyond being a student. The cheer team’s involvement in community events strengthens that bond. Still, Deacon makes academics her top priority.
“I always put school first,” she said. “I’m a student athlete, not an athlete student.”
“She strongly exemplifies our program standards—honor, unity, and diligence.”
Deacon’s dedication exemplifies true Bulldog spirit. Known
for her honesty, authenticity and compassion, she supports teammates and classmates alike.
“You have to earn your spot on the mat, and it has a lot to do with attitude,” she said. It is no surprise that Deacon’s ambition and naturally positive outlook keeps her motivated through challenges.
Her leadership doesn’t go unnoticed. “As a senior and four-year athlete, [Deacon] has naturally stepped up as a leader this year,” head coach Marissa Kelley said. “Teammates look up to her for guidance. They trust [her] to make the right decisions and have what’s best for the team.”
From practices to performances, Deacon gives her all and strives to improve. She hopes to pass on her experience and energy to younger cheerleaders, continuing to be a positive influence on her team and school. This commitment perfectly captures what her coach sees in her:
