Despite its funny name, pickleball has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. Popular among all ages, it combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong into one exciting game. Contrary to what the name suggests, it’s actually a fast-paced sport with frequent foot movement. Players run, slide, and dive to keep the ball in play.
English teacher and pickleball enthusiast Josy Bosworth said, “Pickleball is a great way to stay in shape without knowing that you’re getting a workout.”
Like Bosworth, many players appreciate having a sport where they can sharpen their reaction skills and get great exercise. Having a hobby where they can adjust their speed and competitiveness helps them grow stronger and improve their health while socializing and having fun.
Even here at Grant Community High School, students are getting on the court and taking part in this fascinating game. Participants like senior Dianna Smith find it compelling but acknowledge some setbacks.
Smith said, “It’s more fun with friends, but I don’t like it being competitive.”
It seems that pickleball has evolved into a national sport, and as a result, its competition has grown. Many take pickleball seriously to get that little bit of satisfaction from competitive play.
Pickleball has grown vastly over the past few years. Many people have especially noticed a rise in pickleball courts around the Lake County area. Specifically, at Lakefront Park in Fox Lake, new pickleball courts have been added where people can bring their own equipment and play matches. With its growing popularity, it’s no surprise that everyone seems to have an opinion about the sport.
