Laufey is a common name on social media, with hit songs like “Lover Girl” and “Falling Behind.” She blew up on TikTok in 2023 after posting a video using one of her songs, “From the Start.” Since then, her streaming has continued to skyrocket. Matter of Time is the most recent album in her discography; overall, the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive online, with the album getting amazing reviews among social media users and news outlets alike.
However, Grant Community High School has mixed reviews, with roughly sixty percent of her general audience loving her album. The statistics don’t lie; the album has, all in all, been a hit for Laufey. She references themes like heartbreak, grief, friendship, and love; themes most teens can agree with. This led to most of her younger audience finding her relatable and turning to her songs for comfort during tough times.
Delaney Burke, a Laufey fan, said that, “her music has helped me in a lot of ways. When I was going through a hard time in my life, I would listen to her and everything would be okay.”
Most of Laufey’s audience is of a younger age group, and it seems to be because she talks about many things that the younger generation can relate to. “She talks about subjects that people have actually been through,” Burke said.
Still, others are less convinced by Laufey’s artistry. Ava Larson, an avid music listener, dislikes Laufey and her new album.
“Her music is not my taste, but I see how the other people my age would enjoy it,” Larson said. She doesn’t agree with the popularity of the album, but that doesn’t mean it’s terrible to everyone.
Laufey’s new album has changed the minds of teens everywhere by her music. While some have never heard of her, or don’t exactly enjoy her type of songs, her lyrics express struggles that the general public can relate to, and helps them find a sense of belonging through music.
