Starbucks’ new limited-edition “Bearista” cups have sparked a nationwide trend among teenagers and young adults, leading to long lines, fast sellouts, and a flood of social media posts. The cups feature a simple bear-themed design; similar to the Grunter’s honey bottle. These bottles were released in November and quickly became one of the most talked about Starbucks merchandise drops of the year.

The Bearista collection includes several cup styles: a pink frosted tumbler with a bear bowtie, a mint green cold cup with a sporty bear, and a sparkly option. Some versions also include bear-shaped straw toppers. While the designs are basic, the availability has made them highly desirable. 

Stores across the country reported selling out within hours of opening on launch day. Many customers lined up early, called multiple store locations, or drove long distances trying to find specific designs. In some cases, customers crowded around employees as the new shipments were brought out.

Social media has played a major role in the craze. On TikTok, the cups have appeared in video after video; anything with a plastic bear gains views. Some critics say the excitement is overblown and point out that the cups function the same as any other tumbler. However, many students say the designs are cute “It’s simple, and simple is the new style,” Freshman Elisa Rodriguez-Campos, who values keeping up with trends, states. 

With all stores sold out, the online resale prices have climbed far above the original retail cost of about $20-$25. Some listings show the cups being resold for $70 or more, though it is unclear how many of those sales have been successful.

Overall, the Bearista cup trend shows how quickly a simple piece of plastic merchandise can become popular when limited supply, social media hype, and collectable appeal all combine. Whether the excitement will last is something we will just have to wait to see.
