Club funding isn’t always the most clear subject. Some students see it as unfair because sports are more funded than activities, or that certain clubs are purposely underfunded (insert quote from student) but this isn’t the truth.
It’s not that the school purposely makes sports more funded than most activities. The way funding works and is determined at Grant is by the number of kids participating, equipment and want in the school. “What’s not fully understood about the funding is it’s based on previous need” said Kevin Geist Athletic and Activities Director. This “need” he talks about is the want in the student numbers. One of the examples he gave was Football. It has a large participation rate and has expensive equipment. So it draws a lot of funding because of the “need” in the student population.
Funding can also go towards sports more than activities because of traveling and competitions. Although some clubs and activities also do field trips. Clubs or activities that still seek more funding can get help by proposing a fundraiser. These fundraisers are run through the directors and the board of education to get approved. Sports and Activities can use these fundraisers for field trips, new equipment, competitions, and more. According to Kevin Geist any club has the opportunity for “Whatever the club wants to do there’s a way in which typically for it to be accomplished” Although student funding can be a tough situation to touch on, Grant has the process and the criteria in place.
