In 1776 the act of voting was established. Soon after movements throughout America followed like the Women’s Suffrage Act and the Voting Act of 1965 which allowed people to vote without racial discrimination. Throughout history, voting has been a controversial yet essential part of democracy. Participating is significant because it impacts the entire country. When putting the country’s fate into the hands of citizens, shouldn’t there be a considerable amount of research done before electing an unfit leader?
Everyone of voting age leads a very busy life. It isn’t uncommon for people to lose track of time and end up voting for the person they deem “not too bad” without even considering the harm of an uneducated vote. People fail to recognize that these votes are set for four years, until the next election. People often regard voting as “insignificant”. This would disappoint previous generations since they worked so hard for equal voting opportunities.
Research can be difficult. It can be a hard task to decide what sources are reliable, not finding the information needed, or simply not having the time to dedicate to research. However, research can be as simple as talking to a friend, checking out a candidate’s website, utilizing social media, and staying connected with local news.
Considering seniors will be able to vote by the end of this year, there is a certain urgency and importance to the topic. With uneducated young adults, the country could be put at stake. Regardless of who seems to be the “best fit” for the country, a little bit of extra research could go a long way. History teacher, Mrs. Thomas, states “I definitely think that [schools] should make our students aware of what is out there, so that they can be informed voters.” unfortunately, schools can’t be held responsible for all of the uneducated voters. Thomas also states “There are a ton of resources online…”.
These issues can be easily resolved with a simple google search. The seasoned voters of America just simply ask, to please research before getting to the voting booth. A quick internet search could be what stands in between the success or failure of the country.
