In 2002, Bowling for Columbine caused Kmart to stop selling ammunition and guns. In 2004, McDonald’s stopped
selling the ̈Super size ̈ option, aa to get Mcdonald’s food in larger than average sizes in response to the Super Size Meś release, and in 2013 Sea World ended the Orca breeding program because of the documentary Blackfish. All of these movements are based on films that had major impacts on society. Now in 2024, Leave the World Behind hit Netflix and people are starting to pack ̈go bags ̈ in fear of the world ending. In the middle of 2023, the movie Leave
the World Behind was released. Leave the World Behind is a thriller/suspense-type movie portraying a Semi-Realistic way of how the world would end and the effects on each social class. The Movie seems odd to the average eye
with the mysterious events( like one of the main character’s teeth falling out). Looking for more of a deeper analysis, underlying meanings were eventually uncovered. The film is a complex thriller that sparked many ̈What ifs ̈ for many theorist viewers, such as ̈what if the world is ending soon ̈ or ̈what if this movie is a warning? ̈. This apocalyptic thriller is very ominous and perplexing and shows a specific way the world could end and how it would play out for different races, social classes, and areas. Though the idea of the movie was much needed, the production and layout of the movie could’ve been significantly better. Whether it was purposeful or not, the movie seemed to lack certain details like
an explanation of what and why certain things were happening in the moment leading to confusion for the majority of
the movie. The movie’s ending was lousy and left viewers confused and uninspired, not wallowing the movie to be the best it could be. The movie ended with the young girl in the movie sitting and watch Movies like; Bowling for Columbine, made us think about gun rights, Super Size Me made us wonder how bad the food is in America, and Black Fish made us question animal cruelty in general. Although all these movies are completely
different, they were all produced for one reason; to create some sort of change within society. Leave the World Behind
does this by holding up a mirror to society of how the world would end for each person. With the movie changing
many people’s minds, 42.1% of students surveyed at Grant Community High School claimed the world ending may happen,23.7% think the world ending pretty soon and 21.1% of students believe the world ending will happen in 10 years or more.
Ultimately, Movies can influence the general population’s views by often mirroring reality and showing problems with some sort of solution. So if Leave the World Behind truly mirrors the reality of the world ending, how would you prepare?
