The game is tied. The crowd is on its feet. The championship is on the line. The ball is in Damarrion Smith’s hands.
For the junior basketball standout, moments like these define his passion for the game. Smith recalls his biggest basketball moment—a game-winning buzzer-beater in seventh grade that secured his team a championship. It was a defining moment, but far from the only highlight in his journey. Smith first picked up a basketball at six years old, but it wasn’t until sixth grade that he joined his first organized team. Since then, his love for the sport has only grown, fueling his aspirations to continue playing at the collegiate level. He hopes to earn a scholarship to a D2 or D3 school, with Kentucky University as a top choice. “Just trying to make it to the next level for basketball,” Smith says. “And just wanting to continue my career.” Now a junior, Smith is making an impact on and off the court. His team landed third in the conference with a 9-5 record, and he takes pride in his progress. Beyond the stats, he is known for his leadership and sportsmanship. Teammate Charles Schlicht describes him as the heart of the team. “He is an excellent leader, and he gives us good props whenever we do something good.” But success hasn’t come without challenges. Smith credits his perseverance to the support of his coaches and teammates. One piece of advice from Coach Muller has stuck with him: “If you think you can’t do it, you won’t do it, but if you think you can, you will.” These words have guided him through tough times, keeping him focused on his goals. Whether he’s practicing late, encouraging his teammates, or reflecting on how far he’s come since sixth grade, Smith remains committed to his dream. His journey isn’t just about making baskets—it’s about making an impact. |
