Started in 1960, the Paralympics consists of disabled-friendly sporting events. The games have accommodations for wheelchair users, amputees, little people, and more.
Paris awarded medals to China, who earned two hundred and twenty, Britain earned one hundred and twenty-four, and in third place, America with one hundred and five. China’s Jiang Yuyan won seven gold medals, coming out in first. Jiang competed in women’s para-swimming events with two amputated limbs, winning all competitions. Only nineteen, Jiang is the most recognized athlete. Italy’s Stefano Raimondi competed in men’s para-swimming competitions, winning six gold and one silver medal. With a limb deficiency, he swiftly landed in second place. Switzerland’s Catherine Debrunner won six gold and one silver medal in women’s athletics. Debrunner has a spine defect, though, she’s just as fast on wheels, winning third place.
Despite not being as popular, the Paralympics is on par with the Olympics. Worldwide, the Paralympics remind able-bodied persons that those with disabilities may be different, but never less than.
