Halloween costumes have come a long way since the tradition of trick-or-treating started in the early 1900s. It began as a common practice in Irish and Scottish immigrant communities, gaining popularity in the 1920s and 1930s. In the early days animals, Disney characters, and classic scary story characters were the most popular. The costumes were usually homemade, and looking back now, genuinely terrifying, leather masks were common and the resemblance to the characters they were supposed to portray wasn’t always good. In the 60s and 70s, superheroes and pop culture figures shot to the top of popularity lists, still being mostly homemade. Nowadays most costumes are bought in stores, and there is a wide variety of characters. Morticia Addams has stood the test of time, however, being a popular costume since about 1961. This year’s top costumes are Sabrina Carpenter, a Chipotle burrito, and the Olympic breakdancer Raygun. I am excited to see what next year’s Halloween brings.
